Dog Fur Documents Pollution
There’s a new instrument to detect mercury pollution in the environment – sled dog fur.
Scientists have discovered that analyzing the fur of Alasakan sled dogs can reveal the levels of mercury contamination in the immediate surroundings, the blog Live Science reports. The dogs eat the leftover food from the surrounding villages, which contain the varying levels of mercury.
Here’s a scary thought: if the mercury is showing up in the dog fur, might it mean the toxic substance is showing up in the bodies of the human population as well?

International Earth Days

Of course, adopting a cool, eco-friendly lifestyle is a year round thing, but there are a few days in particular where many people stop and pay attention to these kinds of issues. Coming up soon is Earth Day, celebrated in the US and also in some places worldwide. But it’s far from the only time we stop and take stock of the state of the environment. Grab a pen, pencil, or crayon and put these days on your 2008 calendar, because you’re going to want to celebrate.
International Earth Day – March 20
World Water Day – March 22
Earth Day – April 22
Arbor Day – April 25
World Environment Day – June 5
World Population Day – July 11
World Ozone Day – September 16
Green Consumer Day – September 28
Earth Day Events
While Earth Day started in the US in 1970, it has become an international reason to take a stand on environmental issues. And you can get in on the act. For events going on in your area, take a look at this Earth Day Event Map.
And if you don’t see something of interest, consider starting your own Earth Day activity. For instance, you could host a green scavenger hunt. Just arm scavenger participants with disposable cameras and have teams race to be the first one to fill the camera with pictures of people doing eco-friendly things.
